The virtual boyfriend calls, you pick it up?

The virtual idol has made its debut! Recently, a mobile game called "Love and Producer" has climbed to the top of the Apple App Store's free rankings and even entered the top ten best-selling charts on its launch day. What makes this game stand out is that the characters might not just be confined to the screen—they could potentially reach out and connect with players in real life. This blurs the traditional boundary between virtual and real, making the game an instant hit and signaling a new direction for the gaming industry, which has been around for nearly 50 years. Imagine this: your phone rings, and when you answer, a familiar voice says, “What are you doing?” followed by, “I’ll send you home.” The game mimics a real phone call, complete with sound and visual effects, immersing players in a lifelike conversation. More impressively, these virtual idols can also build social circles. When a story unfolds, you'll see updates from their "friends," and if you comment, they'll respond—just like real social media interactions. Since the dawn of computer games, developers have always aimed to create a stronger sense of immersion. Virtual reality (VR) has emerged as one of the most promising technologies in this space, seen as a potential breakthrough for the industry. However, despite initial excitement, VR hasn't taken off as quickly as expected. Wu Zhen, founder of Crystal Core Technology, noted that hardware shortages and a lack of skilled talent have slowed progress. While the vision of being fully immersed in a digital world, like in *Avatar*, remains compelling, it's still a long way off. In the ongoing battle between the real and the virtual, reality has traditionally held the upper hand. But as game graphics and storytelling improve, the line between the two is becoming increasingly blurred. Characters now look so realistic that they could easily pass for real people. Yet, without player interaction, they remain lifeless. That’s changing. Now, virtual characters are reaching out into the real world. In 2015, a game called "Exotic" surprised everyone by topping the App Store charts. It had no flashy graphics or character designs, but its unique narrative—where an astronaut sends a distress signal from another planet—captured players' imaginations. Similarly, in *Grand Theft Auto V*, players could make calls, order food, or hail a taxi, blending gameplay with real-life actions. Linking the virtual and the real is now a key innovation strategy in the gaming industry. "Love and Producer" took this concept further by incorporating voice interaction as a core feature, even hiring professional voice actors to enhance the experience. And it seems to be working. Looking ahead, virtual reality is opening up new horizons. In 2016, the VR industry generated 746 million yuan in revenue, showing steady growth despite slower-than-expected development. Wen Haolei, director of the Virtual Reality and AI Research Center at Tsinghua University, believes the true value of VR lies in its ability to transport users into entirely new worlds. As more creators build virtual spaces, the industry is poised for significant expansion. Wen gave an example of how we might rethink time and space: instead of meeting on a video call, what if we could create a shared "parallel world" where people appear in real-time, as if they were physically present? This could revolutionize communication, collaboration, and even business models. According to data from the City Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Center, there are over 200 VR companies in Shanghai, spanning education, healthcare, design, and gaming. Investors are optimistic about the future, believing that "unicorn" companies could emerge in the next few years. As Wen put it, "In the future, 90% of human experiences could be captured in VR. Those who master the rules of this new space-time will lead the industry."
