On November 8th, according to TechCrunch, Waymo, the autonomous vehicle company, recently invited a group of journalists to its private testing facility in Castle, where they were given the opportunity to experience a ride in a driverless car without any safety drivers present. The test isn't limited to just one or two routes; instead, it's expanding into broader areas, signaling a shift in how Waymo is approaching the development of self-driving technology. The real-world testing area is located in Chandler, Arizona, where the vehicles are allowed to operate within a defined space. This milestone is not to be taken lightly, as these cars are now operating at Level 4 automation, sharing the road with regular vehicles and pedestrians. Even if something goes wrong, no one inside the car can intervene.
This bold move reflects Waymo’s growing confidence in its technology. The fully autonomous cars have reached Level 4 in specific zones of Chandler, but the current passengers are all internal employees, so the company is still exercising caution. However, this test shows that Google has been preparing for the next major phase of operations after overcoming numerous challenges over the past decade.
Waymo CEO John Krafcik announced the completely driverless trial at today’s Web Summit, releasing a video that showcased the progress. He emphasized that while the initial trials are with employees, the service will soon expand to include existing customers in the Chandler area who already use Waymo’s driverless taxi service.
Looking ahead, Waymo aims to provide a fully autonomous ride-hailing service without any safety drivers monitoring the process. This is a groundbreaking effort in the industry, bringing the dream of commercial autonomous driving closer to reality. Krafcik also mentioned that the company plans to expand the testing area beyond Chandler, now covering the entire Phoenix region—an area larger than Greater London.
Participants in the test can currently use the vehicles for any purpose, whether commuting, shopping, or going to school. They simply use the Waymo app to request a ride and press a button to start their journey. There's also a support system in place that allows users to communicate with an on-site agent whenever needed.
