Three predictions based on MEMS display in electronic devices

From cars to kitchens and even more scenes, chips with millions of sparkling micromirrors are changing the way we interact with next-generation consumer electronics.

And this shift comes from technological advances in optical MEMS – they are becoming smaller, more flexible, better quality and more efficient. Advanced MEMS are pushing new and innovative solutions into applications such as wearable technology, smart homes and home appliances, automotive head-up displays (HUDs), adaptive headlights, infrared sensors, and even holographic images.

I have been witnessing these innovations for the past eight years in the DLP® product group, and I also believe that DLP technology can make a difference in the broader consumer market, at the recent International Consumer Electronics Show (CES). I have seen that this technology has become increasingly popular.

Market analysts also believe that DLP technology has huge, untapped potential. According to forecasts from Yole Development and Grand View Research, the MEMS market will grow 8.9% between 2015 and 2021, with $26 billion in market opportunities in consumer and automotive applications alone.

But what does this mean for us? Here are my three personal predictions to figure out which areas of MEMS-based technology will have the biggest impact.

First, the car display is undergoing earth-shaking changes. The wide field of view and the presence of augmented reality (AR) displays allow drivers to get the information they need while they are always on the road. For example, developers are using a large number of integrated HUDs in new vehicles, and for those vehicles that are not equipped with a display system at the factory, developers are working on a compact automotive aftermarket HUD solution. Supported by our DLP projection technology, both HUD systems enable small, hands-free navigation, communication and entertainment controls.

Second, wearable technology appears in the daily lives of consumers. Wearables have been a hot topic in CES for the past few years, but advances in MEMS technology mean that consumers will be able to experience the rich, sharp and bright display of immersive AR in any pocket-sized device. We have seen how early AR applications such as Pokémon Go have won consumers' hearts. And that's just the beginning, as there will be more advanced wearable displays in the market that offer a more intense AR experience.

Third, smart homes and home appliances are becoming smarter. Homeowners, businesses, and retailers are replacing traditional touchpads with interactive projection displays to provide smarter, more adaptive controls and panels while maintaining aesthetics as much as possible. The next generation voice activated personal assistant can display search results, traffic reports or news report videos according to your instructions. By combining with the Internet of Things (IoT), consumers can enjoy the many benefits and benefits of greater connectivity and greater intuitive intelligence.

It is convinced that the continued development of MEMS-based, smarter, smaller electronic devices will become ubiquitous in the lives of consumers in ways we can't imagine. I look forward to seeing how DLP product users and MEMS engineers are constantly driving innovation in the consumer electronics market.
