The Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G are two of the most exciting trends in the communications industry today. IoT connects billions of devices to the internet, while 5G delivers a faster and more reliable mobile network. In this new era, the network itself is becoming the most critical element. Data traffic is growing at an unprecedented rate, but revenue from traffic-based services isn't keeping up. At the same time, operating costs continue to rise. This presents a major challenge for telecom operators, both now and in the future. To address this, many companies have introduced innovative solutions, and Enea, based in Sweden, stands out as one of the most effective. As user demand for big data services like video streaming continues to surge, network operators face increasing pressure. There are two primary approaches to handle this: either lay more fiber, which raises operational costs, or implement network function virtualization (NFV). NFV allows operators to manage their infrastructure more efficiently, reducing costs while expanding service offerings. By shifting from traditional hardware to cloud-based virtual machines, operators can deploy and scale applications more quickly and flexibly. Network Function Virtualization (NFV) enables network functions to be implemented as virtual machines on a cloud-based infrastructure rather than relying on dedicated physical hardware. This approach significantly reduces costs and accelerates service deployment. Previously, hardware was expensive and had long lead times. With NFV, operators can transform their traditional operations and delivery models. Enea offers a robust, scalable, secure, and reliable platform for enterprise NFV infrastructure. Distribution and Concentration With the growth of IoT and 5G, networks are under greater strain. To handle delay-sensitive services, 5G needs to process data at the network edge using Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC). However, the distributed nature of edge networks poses challenges in terms of hardware diversity and software architecture. For example, in the vCPE scenario, there are both distributed and centralized deployments. Enea believes that the future lies in a hybrid service deployment model. Enea’s NFV solution includes Core and Access components. The Core is a virtualization platform deployed in the central office, providing full OpenStack functionality. The Access component runs on customer devices, offering lightweight virtualization and management tools. Enea NFV Access is a recently launched, lightweight client designed for edge network virtualization. It features an optimized minimum image, high-throughput softswitch, and supports running virtual network functions on KVM and Docker. Platform Heterogeneity While Intel dominates the server market, it doesn’t mean it holds an absolute monopoly. As market differentiation increases, more manufacturers are showing interest in ARM processors. ARM offers customization and cost advantages. As network functions move to the edge, balancing power consumption and performance becomes essential. Enea’s NFV platform supports both Intel and ARM processors, offering a unified software solution across heterogeneous platforms. In May of this year, China Mobile, Enea, Cavium, and ARM signed an agreement to establish an NFV test laboratory. This collaboration will use Enea’s NFV Core platform and ARM-based Cavium ThunderX processors to address key performance challenges in edge access scenarios. Network Intelligence Network intelligence and IP traffic classification remain central to next-generation virtual network nodes and functions. In a virtualized network, application identification helps operators deliver more personalized and secure services to their customers. To enhance its capabilities, Enea acquired Qosmos, a French network intelligence specialist, in October 2016. This strategic acquisition expanded Enea’s product portfolio and strengthened its position in SDN and NFV. Using physical probes, data flows can be monitored and analyzed to improve service quality. However, with NFV, much of the traffic between virtual machines is handled through vSwitches, making it invisible to traditional probes. Enea’s vProbe is a software network probe that can be deployed in both NFVI and VMs, enabling real-time monitoring without disrupting business operations. Service Function Chain (SFC) is a key concept in NFV. Combined with Qosmos’s service identification, dynamic SFCs based on different applications can be implemented, enhancing system flexibility and improving user experience.
