With the rapid rise of new energy vehicles, countries around the world are accelerating their development of electric transportation. A recent report highlights how BYD has successfully "conquered" the Japanese electric vehicle market. Specifically, 10 BYD K9 electric buses have arrived in Okinawa, marking a significant step for the Chinese automaker in this competitive market.
Two years ago, five BYD K9 electric buses were introduced to Kyoto, Japan, making BYD the first Chinese car brand to enter the Japanese market. Now, just two years later, the same company is expanding its presence by introducing another batch of electric buses to Okinawa—a city that welcomes millions of tourists annually.
On December 1st, 10 BYD K9 pure electric buses officially began operations in Okinawa. The buyer was Okinawa’s Ship Agency, which aims to use these buses for tourist transport between the port and the city. This move signals a growing trust in BYD’s technology and reliability.
The introduction of this fleet marks a historic moment, as it is the first time Okinawa has adopted a fully electric bus system. Given the island's geography—without subways or extensive rail networks—public transportation heavily relies on buses and taxis. Introducing electric buses is a crucial step toward sustainable mobility.
Despite the challenges, BYD has managed to gain traction in a market dominated by well-established Japanese automakers like Toyota, Honda, and Nissan. In fact, the Japanese auto industry is highly saturated, making it extremely difficult for foreign companies to break through.
BYD’s journey in Japan hasn’t been smooth. In 2003, the company faced accusations from Sony over alleged patent infringement related to lithium-ion batteries. However, BYD eventually won the case. Later, in 2010, it acquired a major Japanese automotive mold manufacturer, raising concerns about technology transfer. And in 2015, when BYD K9 buses appeared in Kyoto, they were met with skepticism from local netizens.
Yet, after two successful legal battles—winning against Sony in the U.S. and Sanyo in Japan—BYD gradually gained recognition. Today, it’s not just about the product; it's about the comprehensive solution that BYD offers.
At a press conference, Matsuda Miki, president of Okinawa Ship Agency, explained why they chose BYD: “I am very confident in BYD. I visited their headquarters in Shenzhen, and I saw how clean the air is and how widely their electric buses are used on the streets.â€
In Shenzhen, BYD deployed 200 K9 buses during the Universiade, helping the city move closer to its goal of 100% electrified public transport. But Shenzhen is just one example of how far BYD’s electric buses have traveled globally.
Over the past six years, BYD’s electric buses have been operating in more than 200 cities across 50 countries. Partners include tech giants like Facebook and Grab, as well as joint ventures focused on new energy vehicles.
Liu Xueliang, General Manager of BYD’s Asia-Pacific Automotive Sales Division, emphasized that BYD provides more than just vehicles—it offers complete new energy solutions, including solar power stations, energy storage systems, and electric forklifts.
In terms of safety, the K9 model has passed rigorous certifications, including EU standards, California sales licenses, and U.S. Federal Transportation Administration qualifications. It also features advanced technologies such as a bidirectional inverter, wheel drive system, smart key system, and electronically controlled air suspension.
Additionally, the K9 is equipped with a VTOL function for emergency use, allowing it to act as a mobile power station. This feature is especially important in a country prone to earthquakes.
