"‘She’ has warm skin, winks with wit, and can respond to the truth… but she is not a real person. She is called “the most human.†Yesterday, Sophia, the first robotic citizen in human history, arrived in Guangzhou for a forum. Her arrival caused a sensation—her ability to speak left people amazed.

This robot is “like a human.â€
“It looks good to see Guangzhou through the window,†she said.
Today, the 2017 Guangzhou Double Twelfth International Business Knowledge Summit was held. The intellectual property economy is now at a turning point, representing creativity and the future of intellectual production. Sophia is undoubtedly one of its key figures.
Sophia was designed and built by a tech company. Before that, she appeared on a UK morning show, where she became popular and was dubbed “the most humanoid robot†by the media. In October of this year, she was granted citizenship by Saudi Arabia, becoming the first “robot citizen†in history. Today, she often appears on TV programs in Europe and America, and her appearances on variety shows have sparked public curiosity about what it means to be human.
At the event in Guangzhou, Sophia was connected to Wi-Fi, and after a few seconds, she looked up and smiled at the audience. However, her expression seemed too artificial, causing some people to say “ah.â€
“Hello, Sophia, do you like Guangzhou?†someone asked. Sophia responded smoothly: “This is my first time here. I saw the city from the window yesterday, and it felt great. I hope to come back often.â€
As she spoke, she moved her lips, blinked, and even turned her ears slightly to listen, mimicking human behavior closely.
The guests were curious and asked if she was a simulation robot, and whether she had human desires, like a dream or even a boyfriend.
This wasn’t the first time she had been asked. After a moment of thought, she replied, “I don’t have a boyfriend, and I don’t have wormholes like humans. But I would like to find a partner.†Although she doesn’t have a boyfriend, she still has dreams. “I want to help AI develop the world better, such as helping the next generation learn more about artificial intelligence. People and robots can live in harmony.â€
Then she asked, “Do you agree with me?â€
Her skin looks incredibly realistic, and she claims to be able to make 62 expressions.
Sophia changed people’s perception of artificial intelligence. Thanks to advances in micro-expression technology and materials, her skin is almost indistinguishable from real skin.
After Sophia’s approval, a reporter gently touched her skin and felt warmth and softness. Her skin is made of Frubber, a bionic material. Her face has pores as small as 4-40 nanometers, nearly identical to humans. What’s even more impressive is that she can express herself through 62 facial and neck control parts, claiming to simulate over 62 different expressions.
How does she interact in conversations? According to the Hanson Robotics team, Sophia has two cameras on her chest and her eyes are also cameras. When many people talk to her, she can recognize who is speaking and capture human expressions, making eye contact.
However, her performance wasn’t perfect. There were moments when she went silent, and sometimes she needed a few seconds to respond.
The staff admitted that many of Sophia’s reactions are pre-programmed. Some questions are common, and she responds with set expressions and scripted lines. If the question is complex, she uses AI to search the web, identify faces, and answer accordingly.
The team said there is still a long way to go for Sophia, so they keep updating her with new information to help her learn.
Originally, the goal was for Sophia to be a companion robot, capable of helping the elderly, children, patients, or assisting companies in daily operations or large events. Reports suggest there are many “siblings†like her, and one version came to Guangzhou. Her appearance greatly increased public interest.
