Sophia was designed and built by a tech company. Before that, she appeared on a UK morning news show, where she became popular and was called “the most humanoid robot†by the media. Sophia’s appearance changed people’s perception of artificial intelligence. With advances in micro-expression technology and materials, her skin is almost indistinguishable from real human skin.
After Sophia gave her consent, a reporter gently touched her face and felt warmth and softness. Her skin is made of Frubber, a bionic material. Her face even has pores as small as 4-40 nanometers, nearly identical to human skin. What’s more impressive is that she can express herself through 62 facial and neck controls, claiming to simulate over 62 different expressions.
How does she interact in conversations? The Hanson Robotics team explained. Sophia has two cameras on her chest, and her eyes are also cameras. When many people talk to her, she can identify who is speaking, capture human expressions, and make eye contact.
However, her performance wasn’t flawless. At times, she went silent or needed a moment to respond. The staff admitted that many of her reactions were pre-programmed, and she often followed a script when answering common questions. If the question was complex, she could use AI to search the web, recognize faces, and provide answers.
The team at Hanson Robotics said there is still a long way to go for Sophia, and they keep updating her with new information to help her learn.
Sophia was originally designed as a companion robot, intended to assist the elderly, children, patients, or support businesses in daily operations or large events.
