It was time to respond to the little partner's question. This morning, the on-duty editor faced this issue and couldn't resolve it, so the younger friend gave up, and Xiao Bian had to take action quickly.
Based on the problem description, we can determine whether it's a USB power supply issue or a system configuration problem. Let's use the elimination method to figure it out.
Right-click on "This PC" and select "Properties" to enter the System settings.
Then go to "Device Manager" and look for "Universal USB Hub" under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers".
Open the properties of the hub and check the "Power Management" tab to see if the option is enabled as shown in the following image.
If this option is checked, it might be the reason behind the frequent disconnection of your USB keyboard and mouse. You should uncheck it.
If the option is not selected, the issue could be due to insufficient power supply to the USB port. Although keyboards and mice don't seem to require much power, they actually need a stable supply. USB hubs without external power may not provide enough current, especially when multiple devices are connected.
USB keyboards typically require at least 5V and 25mA, while mice need more—around 5V and 200mA. If your USB hub is low quality or your motherboard is old and has many peripherals connected, you might face power issues. Be mindful of that.
Also, even though keyboards and mice are durable peripherals, they are still electronic devices. Prolonged use under unstable power conditions can significantly reduce their lifespan. So, always make sure your USB ports are working properly and providing enough power to your devices.
