The Robot 3.0 era has officially arrived, and industrial robots are becoming increasingly intelligent, versatile, and user-friendly. As the world’s largest robot market, China is at the forefront of this transformation, with its future trends drawing significant global attention. According to data from IDC, the Chinese robot market reached a value of $74.6 billion in 2021, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 31.9%, reflecting strong and sustained demand.
In its latest report, the "Global Commercial Robot Expenditure Guide," IDC highlights that the consumption of robots—including drones—and related services in China continues to grow rapidly. By 2021, this market had already surpassed $74.6 billion (approximately 472 billion yuan), with a CAGR of 31.9%. This impressive growth underscores the country's position as the world's largest robotic market, expected to account for over 34% of the global total by 2021.
To better reflect this dynamic market, IDC has decided to treat China as a separate regional market starting this year. This move aims to provide more comprehensive and insightful data on robot expenditures in China, helping stakeholders gain a clearer understanding of market trends and opportunities.
According to Dr. Zhang Jingbing, IDC Global Robotics and Asia Pacific Manufacturing Research Director, the rise of Robot 3.0 has led to smarter, more accessible industrial robots. These advancements are accelerating the adoption of robotics beyond traditional sectors like automotive manufacturing, especially in high-tech industries. Robots that are lightweight, precise, fast, and capable of safe human-robot collaboration are gaining popularity. Companies that fail to adapt to these changes risk losing market share quickly.
From a technical perspective, the robotic system expenditure in China includes industrial robots, commercial service robots, consumer robots, and related aftermarket hardware. In 2021, this total reached $46.5 billion (about 294 billion yuan). The data also shows that industrial robots remain highly sought after, with the manufacturing sector accounting for over 61% of the overall market in 2017.
IDC’s Global Commercial Robot Technology Expenditure Guide offers a detailed breakdown of business opportunities across regions, industries, use cases, and technologies. It covers 64 application scenarios across 20 key industries in nine regions, including various categories of robotics hardware, software, and services. Unlike other industry studies, this guide provides timely and granular data to help robotics suppliers identify market opportunities and develop effective strategies for long-term success.
