Genesis Robotics Introduces New Robot Motor

Genesis Robotics has launched a groundbreaking robotic motor known as LiveDrive, a ferrule-type motor designed to revolutionize the way robots are built. As part of Genesis Advanced Technology, a Canadian research and development company, Genesis Robotics focuses on creating and licensing innovative technologies for diverse industries. According to CEO Mike Hilton, traditional robot motors often lacked sufficient power and torque, requiring the use of gearboxes to meet performance demands. "With our new design, we've eliminated the need for a gearbox while maintaining the same level of output power and torque," he explained. "This is a completely new approach to motor design." LiveDrive was developed in response to real-world challenges faced by engineers working on robotic systems. Gearboxes were often seen as a major obstacle—complicating designs and limiting efficiency. Recognizing this gap, Genesis Robotics set out to create a motor that could bypass the need for gearboxes entirely. The result is a sleek, compact motor that uses advanced magnetic technology to boost output. At just 2 centimeters thick, LiveDrive can be stacked vertically to increase power without taking up extra space. "We can manufacture these motors in a range of sizes, from 10 cm to 76 cm in diameter," said Hilton. "This flexibility opens up many new possibilities." Stacking multiple LiveDrive motors on a robotic arm, for example, significantly enhances its range of motion. Hilton shared a video demonstrating this concept, showing how the stacked motors allowed for greater dexterity—similar to the flexible arms of Dr. Octopus from *Spider-Man*. Beyond robotics, the slim profile of LiveDrive makes it ideal for applications like exoskeletons, where space and weight are critical factors. "Current exoskeletons are too bulky because of large brakes," Hilton noted. "With LiveDrive, we can make them more compact and efficient." This innovation not only improves performance but also simplifies design, making it a game-changer for future robotic systems and wearable technologies.
