Genesis Robotics has unveiled a groundbreaking robotic motor known as the LiveDrive. This innovative, ferrule-type motor is designed to eliminate the need for traditional gearboxes in robotic systems. As part of Genesis Advanced Technology, a Canadian research and development company, Genesis Robotics focuses on creating and licensing cutting-edge technologies across multiple industries.
According to CEO Mike Hilton, "Previously, robot motors lacked sufficient power and torque to meet evolving robotic needs, which required the use of gearboxes. Now, we've developed a new motor that delivers the same output without the need for a gearbox. It's a completely new approach."
The idea for LiveDrive came from real-world challenges faced by engineers working on robotics projects. Gearboxes were often a major bottleneck, causing inefficiencies and limiting design flexibility. Recognizing this gap, the Genesis team set out to create a motor that could bypass the need for gearboxes altogether.
The result is a sleek, compact motor that uses advanced magnetic technology to boost output power. At just 2 cm thick, these motors can be stacked vertically to increase performance without taking up extra space. "We can produce them in various sizes," said Hilton. "From 10 cm to 76 cm in diameter, there’s a range of options available."
Stacking multiple LiveDrive units opens up a wide array of possibilities. In a demonstration video, Hilton showed how several motors could be combined on a robotic arm, significantly enhancing its flexibility—something reminiscent of the multi-jointed arms seen in *Spider-Man*.
Additionally, the slim profile of the LiveDrive makes it ideal for applications where space is limited, such as exoskeletons. "Current exoskeletons are too bulky because of the size of their brakes," Hilton explained. "With LiveDrive, we can make them more compact and functional."
This innovation not only improves robotic performance but also paves the way for more efficient and versatile robotic systems in the future.
