On November 9, Alstom announced that the world's first hydrogen-powered train would be officially launched in Germany in 2021. Alstom has signed a contract with a railway company in Lower Saxony, Germany, to supply 14 hydrogen fuel cell trains. These trains were successfully tested earlier this year, marking a key achievement in their development. While there are already several hydrogen fuel cell vehicles on the market, this is the first time hydrogen has been used to power a train, making it a groundbreaking innovation.
The hydrogen fuel train made its debut at a rail technology exhibition in Berlin last September. It operates by using electricity generated from a hydrogen fuel tank onboard. Since hydrogen only produces water when burned, it is considered one of the cleanest energy sources available. Additionally, hydrogen fuel engines operate more quietly than traditional combustion engines, further enhancing their appeal.
Starting in December 2021, the train will begin operating between the cities of Cuxhaven, Bremerhaven, and Buxtehude. It can reach a top speed of 140 km/h and has a range of up to 1,000 kilometers on a single charge. This new technology will gradually replace the older diesel-powered trains currently in use along this route.
As for the production of hydrogen fuel, the German side plans to utilize wind power from Lower Saxony to produce it. This approach not only supports the sustainability of the project but also aligns with broader efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote renewable energy sources.
