TD-LTE development is in trouble

With the gradual popularization of the 3G era, the 4G technology TD-LTE led by China Mobile has recently become a hot topic in the industry. Wang Jianzhou, chairman of China Mobile, said, "If China Mobile gets a large enough scale in TD-LTE, it will greatly improve the market share of users with high ARPU values." However, industry analysis believes that the formation of a new technology from its introduction to its popularity is far from being as simple as imagined, which requires a process of continuous exploration and debugging. As an important part of the industry chain, chip manufacturers are also facing severe challenges. It is difficult to draw conclusions on whether they can quickly achieve a growth jump.

It is understood that there are more and more domestic and foreign manufacturers involved in the research and development of TD-LTE terminal chips, including Hisilicon, Qualcomm, STMicroelectronics, Samsung, ZTE Microelectronics, Lianxin, Zhongyouxinke, Spreadtrum, Guangsheng, etc.17 Manufacturers.

However, the reporter learned that after TD-LTE can achieve terminal scale, it can attract the investment and support of the world's most cutting-edge chip manufacturers, but now the global 4G chip itself is in the initial research and development stage, and some foreign chip manufacturers will choose more To some extent, the mainstream 4G chip technology research and development, to a certain extent, the responsibility falls on the shoulders of Chinese chip companies, but whether domestic chip companies can shoulder this task, it is currently not difficult.

Senior communication industry expert Zeng Gaofei said in an interview with an IT Business News reporter that the two most important ports for TD-LTE are the network and the terminal. The core part of the terminal level is the chip, but for now, there are no particularly mature chip samples.

Chip makers trapped in technical difficulties

"The TD-LTE network system has become increasingly mature, but the most urgent link to be solved lies in TD-LTE terminals and supporting chips." Wang Jianzhou said.

Among the more than ten chip manufacturers above, taking Lianxin Technology Co., Ltd. of Spreadtrum and Datang Telecom Group as an example, they need to break through their own technical bottlenecks in the development of TD-LTE chips.

Guo Weijiang, a research institute of China Mobile Group Corporation, said in a speech that the chip is mainly divided into three major blocks. One is the function, basic performance, radio frequency index, and field performance of a single chip. The second is the chip and system debugging, to ensure that both parties understand the protocol and algorithm, and lay a good foundation for later commercial use. The third is to perform multi-terminal simultaneous access and real loading terminal performance test under each system.

Telecom analyst Ma Jihua said in an interview with an IT business news reporter that for the current stage of TD-LTE, the problem that needs to be solved is the coordination of the entire industry chain. This requires the use of the industry as a whole, but the terminal and chip are not controlled. Chinese hands.

Ma Jihua believes that China's shortcomings in chips and systems in the information industry have greatly affected TD-LTE. Although domestic chip manufacturer Spreadtrum, Lianxin under Datang Telecom has been committed to the development of TD-LTE chips. But after all, it is limited in strength. As a standard, such a thing needs to be supported by more manufacturers.

Zeng Gaofei also told IT Business News that chip manufacturers, including Spreadtrum, faced problems mainly in scientific research. Chip integration technology is based on the original single-core technology itself having to pass the quality barrier, but also to integrate many technologies. It is also a big problem to achieve seamless connection, so single-core technology and integrated multi-core technology are difficult.

According to industry analysis, the TD-LTE network construction requires very urgent terminal chips. It is learned that Wang Jianzhou also put forward four requirements for the TD-LTE chip being developed: first, it supports multiple frequency bands, second, it supports multiple network modes of 2G and 3G, third, the technical standards for voice calls need to be defined, and fourth, 4G network terminals need to be relatively determined. In the face of the greatest difficulties in the development of the above TD-LTE technology, chip companies need to provoke this arduous task.

TD-LTE encounters market bottleneck

It is well known in the industry that China Mobile has always been the leader of TD-LTE, driving the progress of the entire TD-LTE project. From an industry perspective, it is gradually closing the gap with LTE FDD. However, compared with the global mature technology of 3G CDMA, TD-LTE is clearly still a newborn. After all, no new technology meets the standard as soon as it is launched. Even CDMA technology still has many flaws. TD-LTE technology crosses cloud computing and The development of IT and other fields is worth looking forward to.

However, regarding the current difficulties encountered by TD-LTE, Ma Jihua told IT Business News that TD-LTE has been advancing mobile and has done a lot of basic work. The biggest problem it faces is still the old problem. International giants are "cold and violent" "Adopt a non-violent and non-cooperative attitude, cooperate with the slow progress of the work, and even have passive downtime. This is the most headache problem for China Mobile.

According to the reporter ’s further understanding, China ’s somewhat promising prospects for the domination of the information industry are facing such problems. As long as the Chinese standards are subject to international discrimination, this is related to the industry pattern. Multinational companies are interested in Unanimously, TD-LTE also has many interest groups in decline.

In addition, besides its own technical problems, how will users' acceptance of the birth of a new thing, and the market behind it can be formed on a large scale, thereby contributing to the entire industry chain?

Zeng Gaofei said that the scale of the market requires a process, 3G CDMA technology is far from popular, and TD-LTE technology is still at a stage of talk on paper. Although China Mobile pushes TD-LTE technology, 3G CDMA still has a lot of market Strong competitiveness, but still meet the needs of users, it is not necessary to cross 3G to develop 4G.

All three operators including China Mobile will skip 3G and promote 4G development.

"The world is gradually entering 4G, and 3G is just a transition. 3G networks cannot meet people's current needs. In fact, 3G has been launched too late in China." Ma Jihua said.

According to the reporter, the degree of user acceptance depends more on user experience. While the future TD-LTE 4G technology will face high-end users, 2G and 3G are facing low-end users. Obviously, the former market is slightly Smaller, the TD-LTE 4G era needs a waiting process to change from the voice billing model to the flow metering model in order to be truly promoted.

Wang Jianzhou is optimistic about the situation of the global TD-LTE industry chain. China Mobile has always declared that it will transition to TD-LTE as soon as possible, or it will take five years to evolve TD-SCDMA to TD-LTE. However, whether the specific implementation and operation can be completed on schedule is completely unknown; whether the terminal chip manufacturers can successfully develop and overcome the key issues such as multi-frequency, multi-mode and voice technology in the transition to TD-LTE is also a big problem Test.
