Microsoft: Cloud computing + GPS technology energy saving 99.96%

Beijing time, December 25th, according to foreign media reports, Microsoft Research is currently developing a very energy-efficient GPS technology, this technology offloads heavy digital operations to the cloud, thereby avoiding the consumption of large amounts of electrical energy, and energy-saving effects can be achieved 99.96%.

"MIT Technology Review" reported that Microsoft is developing a technology called cloud offloading GPS, and is testing a new mobile sensing platform called CLEO to help bring this technology to practical applications . Now, the GPS sensor in a smartphone is the largest energy-consuming component of a mobile phone, and it can be used up to about 6 hours of continuous consumption. The Microsoft research team said that theoretically, using cloud-based offloading GPS technology with only two AA batteries will allow sensors that measure once per second to continue to work for one and a half years.

Normally, it takes about 30 seconds for a mobile phone to receive the necessary information from an orbiting satellite in order to correct the user's location. In addition, in order to connect and track satellites as they move, mobile phones also need to handle a lot of heavy signal processing. The researchers found that by adjusting and offloading a large number of digital processing tasks to the cloud, it takes only a few milliseconds of data transmission to get the phone's initial position correction. For example, smartphones using existing technology to obtain the first GPS correction requires 1 joule of electrical energy, while using cloud-shared GPS technology developed by researchers only requires 0.4 millijoules of electrical energy, saving 99.96% of electrical energy.

The Microsoft development team believes that substantial improvements in energy efficiency can develop many new services based on continuous GPS records. In addition, the development team also hopes to improve the efficiency of the solution by experimenting with some new compression techniques to improve the signal processing algorithm.
