Last week, Tesla finally revealed the long-awaited Tesla Semi truck, sparking widespread interest and debate. Alongside the vehicle, the company introduced a specialized charging solution called the "Megacharger," claiming it can add up to 400 miles (approximately 645 kilometers) of range in just 30 minutes. However, this impressive figure has raised some doubts among industry experts.
Sam Jaffe, a battery analyst from Kane Energy Research Consultants in the UK, is skeptical about the accuracy of Tesla’s data. He argues that the numbers presented in Tesla’s slides far exceed current industry benchmarks for electric vehicles. According to Jaffe, Tesla may be exaggerating its capabilities, suggesting that the company's battery technology isn’t capable of such rapid advancements in the near future.
Moreover, Bloomberg has highlighted that achieving such a fast charging speed would require the Tesla Semi’s charging system to be ten times more powerful than the current fastest Supercharger network. This raises questions about the feasibility of the claim and whether the necessary infrastructure is even in place.
Earlier this year, Bob Lutz, former vice chairman of General Motors, commented that Tesla isn't irreplaceable and that other companies could replicate its success. He pointed out that lithium-ion batteries are widely used across the industry, and there are no secret technologies keeping Tesla ahead.
While Tesla continues to push the boundaries of electric vehicle innovation, the question remains: can the company truly deliver on these ambitious promises? As the industry watches closely, only time will tell if Tesla’s breakthroughs are real or just marketing hype.
