According to the latest statistical report released by market research company DisplaySearch, the cost of LED backlight module has dropped more than the traditional CCFL backlight module. Taking a 40-inch LED-backlit LCD TV as an example, the average cost of the LED backlight module is $118 in the first quarter of this year, and will drop to $100 by the fourth quarter.
LED backlights are considered to be the mainstream backlight technology in the future due to their obvious advantages in color performance, thickness and energy saving, but the price has always been an important factor hindering its accelerated popularity.
However, as more manufacturers develop LED backlight technology, its cost price is gradually decreasing. By increasing the LED light-emitting density, the use of LED chips is reduced. Kevin Kwak, director of LED backlighting at DisplaySearch, said: "In order to reduce the cost of LED backlights, manufacturers need to develop innovative LED backlight module structures and use LED chips as little as possible."
Kevin Kwak also said that research shows that the cost price of 40-inch LCD TV LED backlight module will drop to 100 US dollars in the fourth quarter, and the price gap between CCFL backlight module will be reduced from 3.7 times in early 2009 to 2.8 times.
