HB LED tightens demand in 2010 will increase by 61%



LEDs Magazine reports: IMS Research, the market research organization, recently released its first market research report on the supply of high-brightness LEDs, including white, red, blue and green. The company's market analysts pointed out in the report that by the end of 2009, there were 75 LED manufacturers in the world with a total of 1,413 sets of MOCVD deposition equipment, and the annual output of LED chips reached 188 billion.

IMS Research pointed out that due to Japan's leading position in white LED technology and IP, Nichia's chip production is 2 billion, accounting for 42.2% of the entire chip market (conforming to certain specifications). However, CREE Corporation of the United States quickly grew in this solid-state lighting market with its high concentration, and its market share soared to 10.6%, ranking second. Japan's Showa Denko and Taiwan's Jingyuan Optoelectronics ranked behind with 7.7% and 6.9%, respectively (Table 1).



According to the calculation of shipments (Table 2), the total global chip production is 338 billion (sorted chips after sorting), and Nichia has a market share of 16.5%, and PV is 12.1%. The strong demand for TV business jumped to the third (8.8%), and the market share of CREE and Showa Denko was 8.3% and 6% respectively.



Divided by region (Table 3), Taiwan has a global market share of 37 billion chips, with a market share of 37%; Japan 24.2%, South Korea 21.3%, US 10.8%, and Europe 4.4%.



IMS Research pointed out that due to the growing demand for notebook LED backlight applications, HB LEDs including GaN and InGaN have experienced an extraordinary growth period since the beginning of 2009, breaking the previous record. However, this growth trend continues, and other markets are increasingly transforming into LED applications, including signal lights, ultra-large outdoor displays, digital billboards, personal lighting, automotive and industrial lighting. At the same time, LEDs have also made solid-state lighting gradually penetrate the general lighting market. In addition, LCD TVs are rapidly transitioning to LED technology because LEDs offer better performance, superior form factor and lower power consumption. Therefore, the TV industry will become the largest application market for HB LEDs in 2010, which will lead to a shortage of HB LED supply.

The report predicts that sales of MOCVD reactors will reach 348 in 2010. Despite this, IMS pointed out that its potential market totals 588 sets, so there is still a space surplus of 195-240 sets of equipment, which calculates that there will be a shortage of 12-14 billion chips in the LED chip market this year. This state will continue until 2013. . Market research firm concluded that potential supply shortages put pressure on equipment suppliers and LED manufacturers and forced them to increase production, improve equipment performance and accelerate equipment production.

Barry Young, senior consultant of the company and managing director of the OLED Association, said that "the demand for HB LEDs is expected to increase by 61% in 2010, and the supply that cannot be matched provides opportunities for new manufacturers and new equipment manufacturers."
