Vernier calipers are industrially used measuring length instruments that can be directly used to measure workpieces with high precision, such as the length, inner diameter, outer diameter and depth of the workpiece. In daily work, many people will use it. Almost all friends are familiar, so the vernier caliper looks simple, but are you really using it?

As a widely used high-precision measuring tool, the vernier caliper is composed of a main ruler and a slidable cursor attached to the main ruler. If the scale value of the cursor is divided, the vernier caliper is divided into three types: 0.1, 0.05, and 0.02 mm.

Vernier caliper reading method

Taking a precision vernier caliper with a scale of 0.02 mm as an example, the reading method can be divided into three steps:

1) read the whole millimeter according to the nearest scale on the left main ruler according to the sub-zero line;

2) Multiply the number of reticle lines aligned with the scale on the right and the main ruler by the sub-zero line to read the decimal number;

3) Add the above two parts of the integer and the decimal, which is the total size.

As shown in the figure above, the scale of the front ruler 0 is 64 mm to the front of the main ruler, and the 9th line after the minor ruler 0 is aligned with one of the rulers of the main ruler. The 9th line after the sub rule 0 line indicates:

0.02x9= 0.18mm, so the size of the workpiece to be tested is 64+0.18=64.18mm

How to use the vernier caliper

Close the claws together to see if the zero line of the cursor and the main ruler are aligned. If the alignment is made, the measurement can be made: if there is no alignment, the zero error is recorded: the zero mark of the cursor is called the positive zero error on the right side of the zero mark of the ruler, and the negative zero error on the left side of the zero mark of the ruler (this The specified method is consistent with the specification of the number axis. The origin is positive to the right and the origin is negative to the left).

When measuring, hold the ruler with your right hand, move the cursor with your thumb, and take the object with the outer diameter (or inner diameter) to be measured with your left hand so that the object to be tested is located between the outer measuring claws.
