According to a report by Agence France-Presse on January 11th, a French startup named Oledcomm made a splash at the Las Vegas International Consumer Electronics Show with its innovative light bulbs. These bulbs are capable of connecting to the Internet using LiFi technology, which doesn’t rely on traditional radio waves. Instead, they use visible light communication to provide wireless internet access. This method is not only faster but also more secure compared to WiFi.
Oledcomm's CEO, Oljay Azulay, expressed his ambition to launch the bulb system in the consumer market this year, with an estimated price of around $900 per unit. The company claims that their MyLiFi bulb is the first commercial product to bring LiFi technology into the mainstream. LiFi works by transmitting data through LED lights that flicker at high speeds, imperceptible to the human eye. This technology has been refined over the years and is now ready for mass adoption.

To use the system, the light bulb is connected to an internet socket via an Ethernet cable. A computer equipped with a micro receiver can then access the internet through the light emitted by the bulb. Azulay explained that the system is "very safe," as the signal does not penetrate walls, making it ideal for environments where privacy and security are key concerns.
Oledcomm targets both professional users and the general public. It’s especially appealing to those who want to avoid electromagnetic radiation or are concerned about children’s screen time, as the signal coverage is limited to the immediate area. In the professional sector, the product is being marketed to institutions such as kindergartens, hospitals, and other facilities that require controlled or restricted electromagnetic exposure.
Industry experts believe that by 2023, the global LiFi market could reach $75 billion, signaling a major shift in how we connect to the internet. As more companies explore alternative technologies to WiFi, LiFi is emerging as a promising solution for the future of wireless communication.
