On August 31, 2017, Sharp made a groundbreaking announcement in Shanghai by launching the world’s first consumer-grade 8K TV. This marked a major milestone in the evolution of television technology. But what exactly makes 8K so special? In terms of resolution, it offers four times the clarity of the human eye, and in picture quality, it represents a huge leap forward compared to 4K. This product is not just an upgrade—it's a cross-generational innovation born from the full integration of Foxconn and Sharp.
The model, SHARP AQUOS LCD-70SX970A, is a 70-inch television that was priced at 68,888 yuan. As soon as it went on sale, it generated significant interest, with over 60 reservations already recorded by the time of the press release. The TV was officially launched in four key markets: China, Taiwan, Japan, and Europe, signaling Sharp’s ambition to lead the global 8K revolution.
This 8K TV is more than just a display—it's the core of Sharp’s medium-term strategy to build a complete 8K ecosystem. Alongside this consumer product, Sharp has been working hard to develop the entire 8K industrial chain, preparing for a future where ultra-high-definition content becomes the norm.
In terms of image quality, the new AQUOS 8K TV is certified by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology as the only 8K ultra-high-definition product in the market. With a resolution 16 times that of 1080P, it features Sharp’s third-generation Big Ace Image Quality Technology, along with a direct backlight area control system. These innovations deliver brighter colors, deeper blacks, and support for Dolby Vision HDR and BDA-HDR. It also ensures accurate color reproduction and immersive viewing experiences.
The design of the TV is equally impressive. Crafted with high-grade metal, it showcases a refined texture after extensive machining and polishing. The sound system is another highlight, featuring an innovative column SoundBar with 45-degree deflection, metal mesh, and three built-in speakers. Plus, the back includes four high-power speakers for deep bass. Combined with Yamaha Audio Engine and DTS 2.0 technology, it delivers a home theater-like experience without the need for external audio equipment.
Under the hood, the TV runs on a powerful 64-bit smart processor, paired with a 64GB flash memory and 5GB of RAM. It supports dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1, and uses a Taitun UI optimized from Android 7.0 for a smooth and intuitive user experience. Content-wise, it offers access to Galaxy Kiwi Premium and iQiyi, two of the top video platforms in China.
According to Chen Zhenguo, vice president of Foxconn, the 8K TV is currently positioned as an ultra-high-end product. However, as technology advances and panel costs decrease, Sharp plans to expand its 8K offerings across all price segments.
Beyond the TV itself, Sharp and Foxconn are building a comprehensive 8K ecosystem. Through 8K+5G technology, they aim to transform daily life—redefining work, education, entertainment, family interactions, safety, health, shopping, and even environmental protection. Sharp is actively developing 8K content from source to screen, supported by Foxconn’s strong financial backing.
To further strengthen this vision, Foxconn and Sharp invested 6.1 billion yuan in a 10.5-generation LCD panel production line in Guangzhou Zengcheng. By 2019, this facility will produce 8K panels. They’ve also partnered with ASTRODESIGN to develop 8K imaging systems, while the upcoming 5G network in China is expected to solve transmission challenges for 8K content.
With these efforts, Sharp is not just aiming to be the “Father of LCDâ€â€”it's setting its sights on becoming the “Father of 8K.â€
