Projectors were once used primarily for showing movies. Later, they became common in office meetings. Today, they are still used to project movies, but now they are more commonly found at home.
In the past, projectors were very expensive, often costing tens of thousands of yuan. With the advancement of technology, their prices have dropped significantly. Nowadays, even big brands offer decent models for around two to three thousand yuan.
One example is the EPSON CB-S04E, a 3000-lumen business projector suitable for conferences, training, and teaching. It’s available on JD.com for just 249 yuan.

On one occasion, my boss asked me to show a movie to the staff. I pulled out the projector from the warehouse, only to find it broken—its bulb had burned out.
The boss said, “No way, right? I only used it a few times!â€
I checked the brand and realized it was from a small factory, something I didn’t even recognize. I told him, “Even second-hand Japanese equipment is better than an unknown brand.â€
He replied, “I don’t care. Just get me something cheap and good.â€
After searching online, I discovered that projectors today come in all shapes and sizes—portable, smart, with built-in speakers, and even Android systems. But as someone who's been in the electronics industry for years, I know that many domestic gadgets are still gimmicks. Big brands don’t invest in them unless the tech is mature.
One such product is the Cool Disi CB-100, a mini smart projector with a phone screen, available on JD.com for 1099 yuan.

My boss was excited about this small projector, so I joked, “This is like a toy, not practical at all!â€
Why? Because it only has 1000 lumens, meaning it’s not bright enough. The bulb is tiny, and the image doesn’t go far—it’s like projecting onto a pillow.
I suggested buying a second-hand Japanese model or a well-known domestic brand under 1000 yuan. After comparing options, I finally went with this one:
Tumetimes 1024 Home Projector, priced at 399 yuan on JD.com.

It’s affordable and functional. I don’t need a smart version, and since I won’t use it too often, the risk of failure is low.
I chose not to go for Japanese models because, nowadays, domestic products have improved a lot. They’re reliable, and as a Chinese person, I believe in supporting local manufacturing.
Some of these projectors are great for home use. As for the drawbacks, a penny saved is a penny earned. If you plan to use it during the day, consider a higher-end model.
For example, the Tumetimes K610 offers a larger image, clearer picture, and better sound.

If you're a serious mobile gamer, you might want the smart version. The Tumetimes K808 includes Wi-Fi, Android, and mobile phone synchronization.
