On August 31 this year, the "BYD Cloud Commercial Service Opening Ceremony" took place in Yinchuan, Ningxia. The 5.67 km tourist route of BYD’s “Cloud Track†at Huabo Garden was officially announced to start carrying passengers on September 1. This marks a significant milestone as it is the world’s first commercial operation project of its kind.
Just a few months later, on October 21, local time, Alexandria, Egypt’s largest port city, signed a cloud cooperation agreement with BYD. As an important hub along the “Belt and Road†initiative, Egypt became the second country after the Philippines to sign such an agreement with BYD. The cloud track will also be the first straddle monorail in Africa.
According to the plan, the total length of the cloud track in Alexandria is 128 kilometers. At the event, Khaled Eleiwa, chairman of the Transport Authority of Alexandria City, expressed his confidence in BYD: “BYD has a strong reputation in Egypt and is a very reliable partner. We are excited about this collaboration and look forward to seeing the cloud track open soon.â€
Alexandria, a historic and cultural city, is a major tourist destination. However, its transportation system is limited, relying mainly on ground transport. With no underground or dedicated lanes, traffic congestion is a daily challenge for residents.
Since 2013, the local government recognized that traffic issues were hindering economic growth and began planning rail transit solutions. Despite reaching out to several global companies, little progress was made. In April this year, they approached BYD, and just a few months later, an agreement was signed.
The cloud track is a medium-to-small capacity rail system, offering a cost-effective alternative to subways. It costs only one-fifth of a subway, takes one-third of the time to build, and is highly adaptable to different terrains. It operates quietly, has an independent right-of-way, and offers a visually pleasing design. With a maximum speed of 80 km/h, it can be used in first- and second-tier cities, as well as main transport lines in third- and fourth-tier cities and tourist attractions.
Huang Zhixue, general manager of BYD’s Middle East Africa Automotive Sales Division, highlighted the company's long-standing presence in Egypt. “We have 13 years of local manufacturing experience. Our passenger cars were introduced early and are very popular in the region. One-third of taxis in Cairo are BYD brands. Brand recognition, product reliability, and local manufacturing expertise all played key roles in this cooperation.â€
The BYD Cloud Track was launched in October last year and opened in Yinchuan just one year later. It achieved impressive operational results, with zero safety incidents and no passenger complaints.
In addition, the cloud track has attracted attention from over 100 cities worldwide. Strategic partnerships have already been established with cities like Yinchuan, Guilin, Shantou, Guang’an, and Handan. Next year, it is expected that the number of cities adopting the cloud track will reach 20.
