Focus on car networking, Qualcomm launched based on the Snapdragon 820 car development platform

Scalability, wireless coexistence, and future adaptability are the three key words of Qualcomm's smart connected car reference platform.

Since mid-May, NXP, Italy and other major chip manufacturers have announced new platform products for the development of autonomous vehicles. In addition to appearing as a partner at the Google 2016 I/O Developers Conference, Qualcomm seems to have been very low-key in the past six months. So, can we think that the Snapdragon 820 car processor is already the finale of Qualcomm this year?

If you really think so, it would underestimate Qualcomm's "ambition". On June 8, the day before the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, Qualcomm released a reference platform for smart connected cars. It has key wireless communication technologies such as LTE, GNSS, WiFi, DSRC/V2X and Bluetooth, which means that the platform can provide an integrated interconnection solution that meets the needs of OEM OEMs and component suppliers.

Qualcomm released this reference platform, which is intended to solve the problems of similar scalability, wireless coexistence and future adaptability of the current Internet of Vehicles platform. It supports third-party in-vehicle hardware architecture, is the existing Snapdragon X12 and X5 LTE modems in Qualcomm, GNSS global satellite navigation system, 2D/3D navigation speculative positioning solution, Qualcomm VIVE wireless, DSRC dedicated short-range communication for V2X, Low-power Bluetooth and broadcast capabilities (such as Qualcomm-based tuneX chips, analog and digital tuning using software-defined radios). In addition, the platform also supports the built-in inter-connectivity of Gigabit Ethernet via A2B and CAN bus.

To ensure maximum scalability, the platform is designed to be a framework that can be expanded as tasks increase. It can be extended from a simple car networking unit to a highly integrated wireless gateway that connects multiple ECUs. In addition, this reference platform supports important features like OTA software upgrades, data collection and analysis.

It is worth mentioning that in order to ensure that the software and hardware that dominate the in-vehicle interconnection function can be updated and upgraded throughout its life cycle, the platform provides users with the following data migration methods: DSRC→Mixed/Cellular V2X and 4G LTE→5G .

Of course, Qualcomm's reference platform enables OEM OEMs and component suppliers to launch interconnected products in a way that is explored, polished, and commercialized using modules and solutions developed based on the Qualcomm product roadmap. In an interview with reporters, Nakul Duggal, vice president of product management at Qualcomm, explained.

“This reference platform for intelligent connected car development is a product tailored by Qualcomm for car, supplier and developer who value scalability, modularity and safety. It can help it with a lot of features. Different front-end wireless technologies are integrated into the car and managed efficiently."

Qualcomm's connected car reference platform is expected to be available in 2016. Qualcomm will also showcase prototypes of the platform and application demonstrations from partner companies, including Movimento's OTA update, Savari, during the TU-AutomoTIve Detroit Internet Conference on June 8th - June 9th. Inc.'s V2X communication, and Hortonworks' vehicle data management and analysis.

Qualcomm has released such a smart connected car reference platform, which is “unexpected”. Although Qualcomm has previously said that it will continue to explore the deep learning capabilities of Snapdragon processor products in the future, it will also be involved in the field of autonomous vehicles, but it is clear that Qualcomm has not launched a platform for the development of autonomous driving technology like NXP and NVIDIA. Products, but focus on the "car network" field, this is Qualcomm's smart.

After all, autonomous driving is still in a stage of development that needs to be stabilized. The technical route and product form are not clear. Qualcomm is doing the opposite. It focuses on R&D and is focused on the in-vehicle interconnection field, which is also a mature industry. From an integrated solution platform, Qualcomm has already taken the lead. However, how many OEMs and suppliers are interested in this reference platform, we have to wait until the products are put on the market and wait and see.
