Shanghai Stadium was built in 1997 and covers an area of ​​190,000 square meters and can accommodate 80,000 spectators. In the past ten years, the stadium has hosted many domestic and international sports events. In addition to being the main venue for this special Olympics, Shanghai Stadium is also one of the football venues for the 2008 Olympic Games.
The 2007 World Summer Special Olympics will host 7,500 contestants from all over the world, 40,000 volunteers and 3,500 officials. This is the first time the Games have been held in Asia and the second time in countries outside the United States. By hosting this Special Olympics and the 2008 Beijing Olympics, China will be the first country in history to host the World Special Olympics, the Olympic Games and the Paralympics in the same Olympic Games.
