The PC is completely gone? Apple Microsoft is aiming at the high-end market

The US "Wall Street Journal" online version recently wrote that although the global PC sales decline, but its scale can not be ignored, and Microsoft and Apple's two major technology giants have seen opportunities in the high-end PC market, and successively released new products.

The rumors that the PC is dead are overstated. Ok, maybe not too much. According to the latest data from US market research firm IDC, global PC sales in the past four quarters fell 8% year-on-year, down 28% from the peak level five years ago. In fact, most people who need a computer already have a computer, and the need for a change is greatly reduced. For those who don't have a computer, smartphones and tablets are a cheaper and more convenient option.

However, PC sales so far this year are still close to 200 million units, and such a large market size cannot be ignored. This can also explain why Microsoft and Apple's two technology giants have expanded this business.

Apple Computer

Apple last week redesigned the MacBook Pro product line with the addition of a touch bar to replace traditional function keys. Just a day ago, Microsoft upgraded its Surface Book laptop and unexpectedly launched the Surface Studio all-in-one - this touch-screen device starts at $3,000.

It’s a bit weird to advertise new products in a mature market, especially when the two companies are trying to jump out of the PC framework. Apple officially removed the word "computer" in the company name 10 years ago, and has since released the iPhone that now dominates the entire Apple Empire. Microsoft also launched a similar restructuring last year, emphasizing the emerging cloud computing business and weakening the importance of Windows business.

However, both companies have good reasons to develop their PC business – especially in the high-end market. This area is light and thin, equipped with high-end hardware, and although it is expensive, it has received much attention. According to data from US market research firm Gartner, shipments of high-end ultra-mobile PCs are expected to reach 11% this year. The company expects this sector to account for 23% of all PCs next year, up from 15% last year.

This is a good sign for Apple. In the fiscal year ending September 24, Mac sales fell 10%. But according to Gartner's estimates, the average selling price of the Mac is as high as $1,235, which is 87% higher than the average selling price of the PC industry.

Even if the Mac business was spun off, it still ranked 123 in the Fortune 500 with annual revenue of $23 billion. Although it accounts for only 11% of Apple's total revenue, Mac computers can still play an important role in the Apple ecosystem. It's worth noting that although the outside world is worried that these devices may eclipse each other's sales, in the years when Apple introduced the iPhone and iPad, Mac sales have accelerated.

At the same time, software giant Microsoft never thought about selling against PC makers such as Lenovo and Hewlett-Packard. But getting involved in high-end areas provides Windows with a high-quality display window and brings a lot of business to it. As of September 30, Microsoft's Surface business has generated a cumulative revenue of $4.4 billion over the past 12 months – a 29% year-on-year increase. In a market where growth is slowing, this data is particularly eye-catching.
